Project description_
The dome’s shape that identifies the Beach Club La Manga has always been a characteristic element of the dune landscape of land that separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean sea. It was the roof of a 2-storey beach villa belonged to one of the last ministers during Franco time. In the early 2000s the building was bought by the company Grupo Collado with the intention of renovating and to turn it into an attractive place.
After the first inspection, we immediately noticed that as not only the original interior spaces were absolutely anonymous and not reflecting the quality of the dome, but above the dome ‘s structure were impressively damage and compromised due to the corrosive effects of seawater. Therefore we decided to act in two different directions: the first to demolish and to remove all the elements that could affect negatively the purity of dome’s shape, the second to remove and replace completely dome’s steel structure: a risky and complex action that has focused most of the time devoted to the construction site.
Once freed the original dome’s structure, we built in the central area 3 different wooden volumes, containing the bar, the pool changing rooms and the restaurant kitchen. The upper floor space was dedicated to a full open sitting area and to a big outdoor terrace located in the perimeter of the building from which to admire the landscape through the dome’s opening.
An elliptical concrete staircase connects the two floors. A sliding glass door fully operable from both floors, enables the complete permeability and continuity between interior and exterior spaces. The above system makes creates flexible spaces and dissolves the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. Aforementioned perception is more emphasized during summer time when it is be possible to keep the sliding door system open to create a unique flexible outdoor space that face the seaside.
