Project description_

The competition involves the construction of a new Palace of Sports for the City of Bern within existing sports area located near an urban park. The request was to design a building able to accommodate the most important sport event with 2,000 seats and a secondary gym instead intended not only dedicated to the training of local teams, but also available  for the sport event of neighborhood schools. Both should have been equipped with the necessary auxiliary rooms, such as changing rooms, press room, offices for coaches and management, department stores and multi-purpose halls, as well as a parking areas for almost 150 cars.

Due to difference in height of about 4 m noticed in the plot we found almost natural to use aforementioned differences as a fundamental starting point for the development of the project. The aim was to take advantage of this formless plot and to use it as the main concept of our design. Accordingly we decided to develop and to design an artificial urban landscape, used as a public green park,  that becomes the roof of the ancillary functions including a portion of the parking areas used by the athletes and those who attend the sports hall.

The gym, to observe the correct height, was located at -6.00 m. Therefore the main public  entrance , lobby , and public parking entrance were conceived as a continuation of the public space of the city creating a direct connection with it. That spaces are designed as a mineral hard-scape, finished in Porfido and Cement.

The tribunes are conceived as a pure volume that stands out from the roof. The intention was to design a visible and recognizable element, that should evoke the image of being a jewel.

The structure of this volume, in order to respect the Swiss building tradition, was designed completely in wood, structure and finish as well. Moreover the roof’s main structure is in steel trusses, and the roof’s final finish layer was assumed to be in ETFA, an extremely light material with a  great thermal insulation  and an excellent capacity to diffuse the natural light.
